I only found out last week that our best looking neighbourhood cafe/eatery won their appeal to avoid demolition, after a long campaign and a real by locals. Whoo-hoo!
Earthy and its adjoining organic shop is a true social hub for all of us locals, and such a landmark of the Cannonmills area. It’s fantastic success for the neighbourhood that Edinburgh Council dropped plans to build a Sainsbury’s and luxury apartments in its place – Earthy is going to stay in business for at least another three years. With the same breath they also set a precedent that will be a lot more difficult to contest next time.
I’m totally chuffed for them, for all sorts of selfish reasons. For their pistachio and feta scones, for instance. But also because it’s a great feeling to walk past this lovely place on my way home, seeing all your neighbours sitting outside, enjoying some riverside sun. We should have more places like that, not less.
